OGH Receives ACR Accreditation for PET-CT Scanner
Posted on: 01/18/2010
Olean General Hospital’s Diagnostic Imaging Department has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation for their PET/CT Scanner (positron emission tomography/computed tomography scanner) as a result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
The ACR is a national organization that awards accreditation after intense evaluation of a modality by board-certified radiologists and other experts in the field. The process can take up to one year to complete, and includes hundreds of hours of on-site preparation work. ACR credentials are an important part of Olean General Hospital’s best practices and quality standards. Currently, all radiology modalities at OGH are accredited.
Olean General Hospital added the portable PET/CT unit from Insight Health Corporation when the Mildred Milliman Radiation Medicine Center opened in 2008. A PET/CT scan is a test that examines the body’s cellular function. The scanner follows an isotope injected into the body, working on the body’s blood sugar by tracking high metabolic activity toward a tumor or other abnormality. With a single scan, a physician gets a complete picture of the patient’s entire body, making it easier to diagnose conditions, determine the extent of diseases, prescribe treatment, and track the patient’s progress.
The Diagnostic Imaging Department at OGH provides a comprehensive array of radiology services to the Southern Tier. Since 2005, the hospital has installed the region’s first 1.5 Tesla open bore MRI, a 64-slice CT scanner, digital mammography with a stereotactic biopsy option, along with the PET/CT capability.
Olean General Hospital founded in 1898, is a 186-bed community hospital in Olean, New York that provides health care to a service area of approximately 100,000 residents. The hospital provides a comprehensive array of programs and services. Olean General Hospital has been designated a Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals Performance Improvement Leader. Olean General Hospital is a member of the Upper Allegheny Health System.Back to archive
